National and Local History

Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority was founded on November 4, 1899 at Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Alpha Sigma Tau locally was founded at Shippensburg University on March 13, 1971. The purpose of our sorority is to promote ethical, cultural, and social development of its members. Our motto is active, self-reliant, and trustworthy. Alpha Sigma Tau’s acronym is AST. The colors are emerald and gold. The flower is the yellow rose, and the jewel is the pearl. All of the sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau strive to be the best they can be to better the community around them.
